Fishing by the moon: the solunar theory, explained

Fishing by the moon rests on one idea: fish feed most actively when the moon is directly overhead or directly underfoot, and again around moonrise and moonset. That is the core of solunar theory, the system behind every “best fishing times” table you have ever seen in an almanac or a bait shop calendar. This guide explains where the theory came from, what it actually claims, how much of it the evidence supports, and how to use it on the water without treating it as gospel.

Like planting by the moon, this is a beloved tradition with a plausible core and a lot of confident overclaiming around it. Anglers have fished by these tables for a century and plenty swear by them. Treat the solunar calendar as a way to pick your hours, not a promise of fish.

Where solunar theory came from

In 1926 an American angler and writer named John Alden Knight started collecting folklore about when fish and game feed, testing dozens of supposed factors against catch records. He kept two: the sun and the moon, and published the idea as the “solunar” theory (sol for sun, lunar for moon). His tables, first printed in the 1930s, are the direct ancestor of the solunar calendars still published today.

Knight’s claim was simple. Each day has four windows of heightened animal activity, all set by the moon’s position in the sky:

  • Major periods: roughly two hours centered on the moon’s transit (when it is highest overhead) and its anti-transit (when it is directly beneath your feet, on the far side of the Earth). Two majors per day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart.
  • Minor periods: roughly an hour around moonrise and an hour around moonset. Two minors per day, falling between the majors.

A solunar table for your location is just those four times, listed for each day, sometimes with a rating for how strong the day is expected to be.

Why the moon plausibly matters

The theory is not pulled from nowhere. There are real mechanisms connecting the moon to fish behavior:

  • Tides. The moon’s gravity drives the tides, and tides move water, bait, and predators. In saltwater, tidal current is one of the strongest predictors of feeding activity there is. Moon overhead and moon underfoot correspond to the tidal bulges, so in coastal water the solunar majors line up loosely with tide stages.
  • Light at night. Moonlight changes how well fish can hunt and how safe bait feels. A bright full moon can shift feeding into the night hours, which is one reason the day after a full moon has a reputation for slow mornings.
  • Spawning cues. Many species time spawning to the lunar cycle. Coral, grunion, and various reef fish spawn on cue with particular phases, so fish clearly can read the lunar calendar.

So the ingredients are real. The question is whether they add up to four predictable feeding windows every day, everywhere.

What the evidence actually supports

Honestly: it is mixed, and it tilts in a predictable direction.

  • Strongest in tidal saltwater. Where the moon drives tides and tides drive current, lunar timing genuinely correlates with feeding. Experienced saltwater anglers fish the moving water around tide changes, and solunar majors are, in effect, a rough proxy for that. Studies of catch rates in coastal fisheries do tend to find lunar patterns.
  • Weakest in lakes and ponds. Freshwater has no meaningful tide. The claim that a largemouth in a farm pond feels the moon pass overhead and starts feeding is the part of the theory with the least support. Analyses of large freshwater catch records have generally found lunar effects that are small, inconsistent, or absent once you account for time of day and season.
  • Phase effects are real but modest. There is decent evidence that catch rates for some species vary across the lunar month, but the pattern differs by species and water, and it is dwarfed by weather, season, and time of day.

None of this makes the tables useless. It means they are a tiebreaker, not a forecast.

New moon, full moon, and the traditional calendar

Alongside Knight’s daily windows, anglers keep an older and simpler rule of thumb: the days around the new moon and the full moon are the best of the month. The reasoning holds up better than most folklore. Both phases produce spring tides, the biggest tidal swings and strongest currents of the month, which concentrates feeding in saltwater. Around the new moon, dark nights push feeding into dawn and dusk, right when you are likely to be fishing. Around the full moon, night fishing picks up, and the classic advice is to fish early and late but skip the slow midday after a bright night.

How to fish by the moon in practice

If you want to give the tradition a fair run, here is the plain method:

  1. Look up moonrise and moonset for the exact spot you are fishing. These are the minor periods, and they are also the easiest to use because they happen once each at civilized intervals.   2. Fish the hour around each, roughly 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after. Be rigged and ready before the window opens, not driving to the ramp during it.
  3. Add the majors if your day allows. Moon overhead and moon underfoot each get about a two hour window. Transit times move about 50 minutes later each day, same as moonrise.
  4. Prize the overlaps. The best sessions on the calendar are when a solunar window lands on dawn or dusk, because you are stacking the moon on top of the most reliable feeding times fish have. A moonrise that coincides with sunset, common near the full moon, is the classic example.
  5. In saltwater, cross-check the tide. If the solunar major disagrees with the tide chart, trust the tide. Moving water beats theory.

What matters more than the moon

Here is the honest close. Ask any guide to rank what decides a day of fishing and the moon lands well down the list, behind weather fronts, barometric pressure, water temperature, season, water clarity, and simply being on the water at dawn or dusk. A perfect solunar major under a cold front that shut the fish down is still a cold front. A “poor” day on the calendar with stable weather, warming water, and bait in the shallows can be the best day of your year.

So use the solunar calendar the way a thoughtful gardener uses a planting calendar: as a rhythm that gets you out at deliberate times, paying attention. Fish the hour around moonrise and moonset, favor the days around the new and full moon, and let dawn and dusk do the heavy lifting. The moon will not fill the cooler by itself. But the angler who plans around it is on the water at good hours, watching conditions, and that angler catches more fish.
