Common questions

When is the next full moon?

The countdown at the top of this page shows the next full moon in your own time zone, along with its traditional name. Full moons arrive every 29.5 days on average, so there are usually twelve in a year and occasionally thirteen.

Is the full moon on the same date everywhere?

The instant is the same everywhere on Earth, but the local date is not. A full moon at 02:00 UTC falls on the previous evening in the Americas, so calendars in different countries can list neighbouring dates for the same moon.

How long does a full moon last?

Technically it is a single instant, the moment the moon sits opposite the sun. To the eye it looks full for about three nights, because the illumination stays above 98% for roughly a day and a half either side.

Why do full moons have names?

The names are seasonal, mostly drawn from Native American, colonial American, and European traditions, and describe what was happening on the land that month. The Wolf Moon, Snow Moon, and Harvest Moon are the best known.
